Long ago, in the hills and streets of Judea, Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples. He wanted to show them the path to a truly good life with God. "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on the chair of Moses," he began. "So do and observe the good things they teach you from God's law, but do not follow their example, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy burdens for others to carry but will not lift a finger to help. Everything they do is performed to be seen by people. They love the places of honor at banquets, the best seats in synagogues, important greetings in the marketplaces, and being called 'Rabbi.'
But you, my friends, should not be called 'Rabbi,' for you have one Teacher and you are all brothers and sisters. Call no one on earth your father, for you have but one Father in heaven. Do not be called 'Master,' for you have one master, the Messiah. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
